Drawing a Block within a Block

Sister's Choice in a 45° Diamond

Sister's Choice in the Cypress Block

Sometimes you are creatively daring and want to try something different. Follow the instructions below to try your hand at drawing a block within a block. This is NOT an overlaid block but you are actually going to draw within the patch lines of a block. I will be using the Sister's Choice block and the 45° diamond block in my examples. If you follow the basic steps almost any block possible!

1. In order to draw within the patches of a block you first have to disable the Snap to Grid feature and enable the Snap to Node. To do this you have to use the Advanced Drawing Tools provided with EQ4. With the diamond block on the EasyDraw Worktable, go to the File Menu and select Preferences. Click on the Drawing Options tab. Check the box by Advanced Drawing Features. Click OK.

2. Go to the Block menu and select Drawing Board Setup. You should now see two new tabs. Click on the EasyDraw tab. Remove the checkmark beside Snap to Grid by clicking on it. Check the box beside Snap to Nodes. Under Node Size, check Large, this will make them easier to see! Click OK. Note: 1. You can add some of these features as buttons to the Tool bar to make them easy to toggle on and off -- see the Help menu. 2. Read more about the individual Advanced Drawing tools in the Help menu. 3. To return to default settings you can uncheck the Advanced Drawing Options under Preferences in the File menu.4. Use the refresh tool often to clear things up and make nodes more visible.

3. Now back to the block. Click on the little black square in the corner of the Edit tool to bring up the Edit pop-up menu and then select one line of your diamond patch that you want to partition. (or right-click on the line and select Edit from the context menu) To add nodes to help draw the Sister's Choice block within the diamond, change Partition number to 5 and click on the Partition bar. You should now see 5 nodes along the line you selected. Repeat this for all four sides of the diamond.

4. Click on the Line tool and draw lines to connect the nodes, making a 5-patch diamond grid within the diamond. Save to sketchbook. Click on the Refresh tool and you should now see nodes at the intersections of your grid. Draw the remaining 8 short diagonal lines to make the Sister's Choice block in the diamond. It may help to have a copy of the block you want to draw to refer to. Save the block in the Sketchbook and then Save the entire project.

5. Now you can print templates, change the size, print a foundation for paper piecing or color your block. Let me know if you're successful or have any questions!
